About this event

Part of Synesthesia II

Featuring discussions, practical workshops and sharing of practice with contributors from different perspectives of these encounters, we invite you to join as an artist, writer, maker, curator, reader, gallerist, or someone otherwise connected to this field.

Please note that while the panel discussions and speed shows are open to a larger audience, places in the workshops are limited. If you would like to take part in the workshops, please make sure you book the add-on tickets for them in advance.

Part 1: Writing

10am - 2pm , Thurs 30th June 2022

10am. Panel Discussion facilitated by Mark Leahy with a selection of writers and artists. Thinking of writing as a supplement, as happening in parallel, as offering an expansion, as acting to complement art practices or the making of art.

Panelists Emma Bolland, Josie Cockram, Sara Bowler and J. R. Carpenter.

12noon. Lunchtime Speedshow with short presentations from four Synesthesia I & II writers and artists, hosted by Vanessa Murrell of DATEAGLE ART, one of the curators of Synesthesia II.

1pm. Workshop: Bollocks to the Blank Page with Ella Frears. An hour-long generative online workshop looking at exciting short form poetry, prose and text works. Through a series of low-pressure exercises, you’ll shake off your funding application/artist's statement voice and find new forms, ideas, and ways of using language creatively. For all levels of writing experience - everyone welcome.

Part 2: Publishing

10am - 2pm , Thurs 7th July 2022

10am. Panel Discussion facilitated by Hugh Frost with a selection of artists, curators and publishers. Making artwork public in a gallery show, online, in a studio visit, has parallels with the event of bringing writing to a readership. How can they learn from each other, and how can artists consider innovative and flexible publishing platforms and models for communicating about their work?

Panelists Laura Haynes, Abigail Reynolds, Leomi Sadler and London Centre for Book Arts / A6 BOOKS.

12noon. Lunchtime Speedshow with short presentations from four Synesthesia I & II writers and artists, hosted by Vanessa Murrell of DATEAGLE ART, one of the curators of Synesthesia II.

1pm. Workshop: The Paper Stage with Emily Juniper. After an introduction to her practice, Juniper will offer participants the chance to follow along with her to make a simple stitched booklet (material will be posted to you in advance of the event). The process of making (and the designed content within) this pamphlet, offers the audience a way to explore the idea that the book is a performance space, one we can be playful and imaginative with when we stage our work.

About Synesthesia

Synesthesia is a new, experimental project that facilitates collaboration between curators/writers and artists. During this three-month project, we will be showcasing the work of ten artists from across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. The project investigates the ways we experience art remotely, using the power of words and conversations, not only in the context of lockdown but also to address the challenges that often face artists outside of urban centres.

Synesthesia is a Cultivator Showcase, led by The Bridge team at the University of Plymouth, in partnership with Creative Kernow.
